Send in the Marines

You would think that after being married to a Marine for (almost) 10 years, and being an Army brat on top of that, that I would be used to some of the oddities of base life. But I'm not.

Now running on base has it's advantages at times.
1. Every major (and some minor) roads have bike/running trails along side of them. There is no need to have to dodge cars on the street.

2. In the summer they line these paths with big orange coolers of ice water every couple of miles. They supply trash bags and little paper cones too. Very nice.

But some things you never quite get used to. For instance, today there were Marine's in the woods that is to the side of the pathway. They were every 10 feet or so, lying on the ground, weapons drawn. I can tell you that it's little intimidating to run along side that.

Then on my way back from my turn around point, I am approaching a hill that 10 Marines were running down, weapons in hand, elbow to elbow.

Now this is disturbing on many levels. First of all, I was happily singing along to Xanadu and had to stop for fear of ridicule, and it leaves you with the dilema, do you stop and let them run around you or do you go to one side of them?

What would you have done?

That sounds intimidating. I'm sure that I would have done something stupid, but I don't know what.

I would have smiled at them and stepped aside, but I woulda kept on singing. The Marines appreciate you treating them as (normal) people too :-)

Wow, I would have go to the side of them...

But where are you getting these coolers of water? We don't have them here in HI or am I running around the wrong paths!?!

I'm AF, but my training partner is a Marine, and he's pretty intense...one side or the other doesn't much matter, as long as you're out of the way! Oh yeah, I'd smile and wave too...and as Wes said, there's nothing wrong with singing too!

If I was singing along to Xanadu, I would have begged them to shoot me!

The same goes for the Rocky soundtrack you are so fond of.

Nice job out running though, but c'mon! Xanadu?

That Ryan is so damn funny.

Marines running with weapons? Marines on the ground with weapons? Me nearby to witness this? Oh dear, that sounds like my fantasy.

I have serious issues with Marines. Very serious issues. I married one so that took care of some of the issues.

I have issues with running listening to Xanadu. Like how do you RUN listening to that?

I would have panicked and jumped off the path to let them get through. And then I probably would have gotten a lot of strange looks.

I would have gone around 'em, but not before I would have sung a few lines and busted a move.

I suspect I would have turned tail and run in the other directions - weapons out scares me!

But I am immensely jealous of these always-at-the-ready water stops on non-race days; I can't even get enough water on race days!

I love the coolers of water!

I don't know what I would of done, it wouldn't of been graceful whatever it was

PASS THEM, they wanna check you out. Simple as that! :O)
